Commissioned by the Maier Duo, Where Frost Wilts takes inspiration from Dante Alighieri’s
Divine Comedy, more specifically the Inferno. The sound world and its behavior reflect how I imagine a
person might feel if they envisioned both the inferno and life on earth simultaneously. The dystopian and
pleading nature of certain moments, contrasted with the sporadic and agile ones, creates a non-harmony
of behaviors within the piece. The structure and flow, or lack there-of, emerge from the experience of a
person who has been misguided into a land of torture, their own psychotic imagination. This disheartening
underpinning is what prevents any true sense of closure or climax, instead presenting an ongoing journey.
A journey with such inevitability that it reminds us the sun rises with or without us.
